You can make a difference to a child with autism...Volunteer!
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder defined by qualitative
impairments in social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication
and restricted repetitive and stereotyped behaviour, interests and
activities. It is of unknown etiology and occurs in approximately 1 in 150
to 200 individuals with a 4:1 male to female ratio. Autism has an onset of
prior to 3 years of age.
Volunteers at the Centre for Autism Services are a valued supportive
resource. Volunteers work in conjunction with the Centre’s professional
staff to provide comprehensive, innovative services to children, youth and
their families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Group Activities
Group activities run continuously throughout the year. Most group
volunteer roles are based on 1-2 hours once a week for 6-8 weeks. The Group

are designed to work on social skills, play skills, and life skills
appropriate for different circumstances, (cooking, dressing, recreational
play) Under staff supervision the volunteer will participate in the
preparation, set up and clean up for the specific program. The volunteer
will actively contribute to the positive outcomes of a program in a team
collaboration model supporting a child reach his or her highest potential.
