Community Integration Programs

Tae Kwon Do Young Masters

The Young Master Club was designed to help children who have difficulty focusing in their daily lives. By dedicating an hour each week to practice cognitive-behavior strategies, children do their best to help centre themselves and regulate their arousal levels. Through occupational therapy strategies, adapted Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, and relaxation training, Young Masters are able to fully engage in meaningful occupation and unlock their unlimited potential to gain self-esteem, confidence, and camaraderie with others. The tenants of Tae Kwon Do, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and indomitable spirit empowers the Young Master to apply the skills taught in the Dojang to their own lives. Tae Kwon Do is not just an Olympic sport or martial art; it is a way of life.

Young Masters will be started up in January 2010 and groups will run in both the north and south end of Edmonton.

Learn to Skate

The Learn to Skate program will introduce children and their parents to basic skating skills (according to the Skate Canada CanSkate curriculum) in a fun, play based group setting. The group will run for 45 minutes on ice, preceded by 15 minutes to practice dressing skills. The group will be facilitated by two NCCP certified Skate Canada coaches (approximately 6 children to 1 coach) with the assistance of Centre volunteers, parents and an Occupational Therapist.

The Centre has established a community partnership with Gateway Skating Club which provides us with access to shared ice facilities. Please note that Gateway SC may be running a separate group lesson on the same ice surface, at the same time as the Centre’s Learn to Skate Group. The Centre is also working with United Cycle to help provide equipment for children participating in the program.

For children to experience introductory level independent skating skills including: falling down/getting up, walking forward, walking backward, gliding, stopping, jumping, turning forward to backward on the spot and walking in a circle.

For parents to learn methods/strategies to introduce new basic skating skills to their children in a fun family oriented setting thus, creating an opportunity for community participation by the child and the family as a whole.

For children to be introduced to skating helmets, mittens and other skating apparel required on the ice.

Kids Yoga

This group is designed to introduce concepts of yoga – breathing, body awareness and relaxation – to children and the adults in their lives. These techniques will be brought together into a practice that the family can use at home. Through using these techniques on a regular basis people can learn self-regulation skills such as calming, awareness, and management of disability-related effects.

Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the class with their children in order to build a more effective use of the techniques that can be used regularly at home. Any adult who is a regular part of the child’s life is welcome to come. Yoga techniques are most effective when they can be incorporated into daily routines. An individualized practice with tips and modifications specific to each child will be provided by the end of the session. Social stories on yoga time have been done for children who benefit from them.

Gymnastics Programs

The Centre for Autism Services Alberta is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive, innovative services to children, youth and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders through consultation, collaboration, intervention, education and support (mission)

This is the third year that we have been involved with Dynamyx Gymnastics Club and Ortona Gymnastics Club to provide gymnastics movement groups. Dynamyx and Ortona recognize the importance of family-oriented leisure activities for children with disabilities. These clubs have gained knowledge and experience working with children with autism.

Through gymnastics, children get to experience the benefits of moving their bodies; climbing, reaching, grasping, even falling… the gymnastics environment can be used to construct a therapeutic playground, assisting some special needs children to become motivated and organized.
